Barrierefreie Dusche: One Submittal Package for Fixtures, Seats and Rails in German Tenders

How to compile a single submittal package for an accessible commercial shower in Germany: coordinating fixtures, seating and support rails, evidence requests and official sources.

Barrierefreie Dusche: One Submittal Package for Fixtures, Seats and Rails in German Tenders

For a barrierefreie Dusche in a German commercial or care project, the tender works best when all shower fixtures, seating and support rails are submitted as one coordinated package rather than as separate product line items. This article explains how specifiers and project buyers in Germany can structure that package, what evidence to request from suppliers, and which official German accessibility sources to cite.

Why the shower belongs in one scope

In an accessible shower, the grab rails, the fold-down shower seat, the fittings and the wall construction interact. A rail position that suits the wall may conflict with the seat hinges. A seat model may require wall conditions the rail does not. If each product is tendered separately, these dependencies surface during installation, when changes are expensive.

Treating the shower as one scope also clarifies responsibility. The project designer defines the layout and the requirements; the suppliers document how their products meet them; the qualified installer confirms the wall construction and load path. A single submittal package makes those handovers visible and auditable.

The German framework to cite

The federal accessibility office (Bundesfachstelle Barrierefreiheit) identifies DIN 18040-1 as a recognized planning framework for publicly accessible buildings. The office's guidance is a reliable starting point for locating the relevant official sources: https://www.bundesfachstelle-barrierefreiheit.de/DE/Fachwissen/Gebaeude/gebaeude_node.html

Two points matter at tender stage. First, the project must check the applicable state building requirements (Bauordnungen der Länder) and the building type, because obligations vary. Second, a rail alone cannot establish building accessibility. Accessibility is assessed for the building and its routes, not proven by individual products. Cite the official guidance in the specification as the planning framework; do not treat any product citation as evidence of building compliance.

Note that mounting heights and dimensions must be taken from the current, applicable source documents. Do not copy figures from secondary websites or older editions into the tender text.

What the submittal package should contain

For each shower in the project, compile one package covering the full scope:

  • A room-specific schedule listing every rail (fixed and fold-down), the shower seat, the fixtures and their reference to the designer's layout drawing
  • Manufacturer product data sheets for each model, including materials, finishes and dimensions as stated by the manufacturer
  • The manufacturer's statements on intended use and any load-related documentation the manufacturer publishes for the model
  • Wall construction prerequisites: what each wall-mounted product requires from the substrate, handed to the structural reviewer and qualified installer
  • Cleaning and maintenance documentation per model, so the facility operator can plan servicing from day one
  • Model-specific evidence requested in writing from suppliers, referenced by model number so nothing is attributed to the wrong product

Keep the package as a single indexed document. Reviewers can then check the seat, rails and wall prerequisites against each other instead of chasing separate supplier submissions.

Evidence requests to suppliers

Vague evidence requests produce vague answers. Ask suppliers for model-specific information in writing:

  • Confirmation that the quoted model number matches the submitted data sheet, including finish and grip type
  • The manufacturer's own documentation on intended use and, where published, load-related information for the exact model
  • Any wall or substrate requirements the manufacturer states for wall-mounted products
  • Maintenance intervals, cleaning-agent compatibility and spare-part availability for hinge and locking mechanisms on fold-down rails and seats
  • Delivery periods per model, so the installation sequence can be planned

Do not accept generic statements about a product family. If a supplier cannot provide model-specific documentation, record that gap in the tender evaluation.

Coordinating rails, seat and fixtures on paper

Before the package is issued, check the coordination points on the layout drawing with the project designer:

  • Fixed and fold-down rail positions relative to the shower area and the seat, so grips remain reachable from a seated and standing position as designed
  • Seat swing and any storage or circulation clearances the designer has planned
  • Fitting positions (shower controls, head) so they do not collide with rails or seat hinges
  • Wall types behind each mounting position, flagged for the qualified installer's verification

Record these checks in the submittal package. If the layout changes during planning, update the schedule and the wall prerequisites together.

Project checklist

  • Confirm the building type and the applicable state building requirements with the project designer
  • Reference DIN 18040-1 as the planning framework via the federal accessibility office guidance
  • Compile one indexed submittal package per shower, covering rails, seat and fixtures
  • Request model-specific evidence in writing from each supplier
  • Hand wall construction prerequisites to the structural reviewer and qualified installer
  • Collect maintenance and spare-part documentation for fold-down mechanisms
  • Record any documentation gaps in the tender evaluation
