Fold-Down Shower Seats in German Commercial Projects: A Procurement Checklist

What buyers should compare when sourcing klappbare Duschsitze for German commercial washrooms: seat types, load and locking documentation, wall prerequisites and submittal records.

Fold-Down Shower Seats in German Commercial Projects: A Procurement Checklist

For German commercial and care projects, a fold-down shower seat (Duschsitz, klappbar) should be procured as a documented structural product, not as a simple accessory. Before ordering, compare seat types, request load and locking documentation from the manufacturer, confirm the wall construction with the project designer, and record all evidence in the tender submittals. This article sets out those procurement questions for projects in Germany.

Which official German guidance applies

In Germany, the federal accessibility office (Bundesfachstelle Barrierefreiheit) identifies DIN 18040-1 as a recognized planning framework for publicly accessible buildings. See the office's building knowledge page at https://www.bundesfachstelle-barrierefreiheit.de/DE/Fachwissen/Gebaeude/gebaeude_node.html.

Two points matter for procurement. First, DIN 18040-1 is a planning framework, not a product certificate: compliance with the standard does not prove that any specific seat model is suitable. Second, state building regulations (Bauordnungen der Länder) and the building type determine which requirements actually bind the project. Ask the project designer to confirm the applicable state requirements and the target standard early, then reference that decision in the specification. A seat or rail alone cannot establish that a building is accessible.

Do not import US ADA dimensions into a German project. Requirements for seats in accessible showers under US rules are not German rules, and converting them would misstate the applicable framework.

Comparing seat types at enquiry stage

Fold-down shower seats differ in more than price. Structure your enquiry so quotes are comparable:

  • Mounting and folding mechanism: hinge type, locking behaviour in the raised and lowered positions, and whether the seat folds away fully for clearance.
  • Seat surface material: consider slip resistance, drainage behaviour and compatibility with the project's cleaning regime.
  • Frame material and finish: corrosion resistance in wet rooms, and finish consistency with adjacent support rails and fittings.
  • Suitability for the user group: care settings may require seating that supports assisted transfers, which the designer should define.
  • Fixing points: the number and spacing of fixing positions is a manufacturer-specific detail; request model-specific information rather than assuming a pattern.

Load and locking documentation to request

A fold-down seat carries dynamic loads every time a person sits down or rises, and the hinge and locking mechanism are the critical components. At tender stage, request from each supplier:

  • The manufacturer's stated load capacity for the specific model, with the basis on which that figure is given.
  • Documentation describing the locking mechanism and its function in the down position.
  • Evidence of how the hinge and mechanism are maintained over the product's life, including any service intervals the manufacturer specifies.
  • Confirmation that the documentation applies to the exact model and finish quoted, not to a product family.

Flanso does not publish test certificates through this article and makes no claim of certification here. Ask us, or any supplier, for model-specific product information and retain it in the project record. Never accept a reference to DIN 18040-1 as proof that a seat has been tested.

Wall construction prerequisites

A fold-down seat only performs if the wall behind it can carry the load into the building structure. This is a project design question, not a product selection question:

  • Ask the project designer to confirm the wall construction at the seat location: solid masonry, reinforced concrete, or a lightweight or framed assembly.
  • For lightweight constructions, the load path into the structure must be resolved by the designer before seats are ordered, because fixing options and required backing depend on the wall build-up.
  • Coordinate the seat position with adjacent support rails, shower controls and drainage so the transfer route works as one layout rather than as isolated fittings.
  • Hand the confirmed wall build-up to the qualified installer. Installation method and fixings must be determined by the installer and the designer for the specific wall; this article deliberately gives no installation instructions.

Flanso provides background on wall and anchoring considerations at https://flanso.com/#anchoring, which can support early coordination but does not replace the designer's assessment.

Building submittal records

Fold-down seats are frequently challenged in handover because the evidence trail is incomplete. Build the submittal pack from the enquiry onwards:

  • Product data sheet for each quoted model, including materials, seat dimensions and stated load capacity.
  • Manufacturer documentation for the hinge and locking mechanism.
  • Confirmation of the wall construction at each seat location, signed off by the project designer.
  • The layout drawing showing seat positions relative to rails, controls and clearances.
  • The reference to the applicable German guidance (DIN 18040-1 and the relevant state building requirements) as the planning framework, with the project-specific decisions recorded against it.
  • Maintenance information the manufacturer specifies, for the facility operator's documentation.

Project checklist

  • Confirm the building type and the applicable state building requirements with the project designer.
  • Reference DIN 18040-1 as the planning framework per https://www.bundesfachstelle-barrierefreiheit.de/DE/Fachwissen/Gebaeude/gebaeude_node.html, and record where project decisions sit against it.
  • Define seat locations and the transfer scenario each seat serves.
  • Obtain wall construction confirmation for every seat position before ordering.
  • Request model-specific load, locking and maintenance documentation from each supplier.
  • Compare quotes on seat type, materials, mechanism documentation and evidence, not on price alone.
  • Pass the wall build-up and layout to the qualified installer for the installation design.
  • Retain all documentation in the handover file.
