Choosing and Maintaining Stainless Steel Grab Bars in US Commercial Washrooms
How to specify a stainless steel finish for commercial washroom grab bars, what maintenance questions to ask, and which ADA requirements still govern the hardware.

For US commercial washrooms, a stainless steel grab bar should be chosen for its finish suitability, cleanability and compatibility with the wall structure behind it, while the geometry, strength and placement of the bar remain governed by the ADA Standards issued by the US Department of Justice in 2010. Finish choices and what they mean for a washroom
Stainless steel is a common finish for commercial grab bars because it is durable, easy to clean and suits a wide range of interior schemes. Typical options include polished or bright finishes, which reflect light and are common in public restrooms, and satin or brushed finishes, which show fingerprints and surface marks less prominently and can sit more quietly in a designed interior.
When comparing finishes, ask manufacturers what the finish is and how it should be cleaned. Do not assume that a polished or brushed appearance tells you anything about the steel grade, its corrosion performance or its compliance with any standard. Those are separate questions, and any claim about grade or corrosion behaviour should be backed by model-specific information from the manufacturer.
ADA requirements that still apply regardless of finish
The finish you choose has no effect on the dimensional and structural requirements of the ADA Standards. For reference, at the time of writing, the key grab-bar provisions are found in section 609 of the standards (https://www.access-board.gov/ada/):
- Section 609.2.1 sets the outside diameter of a circular grab bar between 1.25 and 2 inches, with 32 and 51 mm given in the standard.
- Section 609.4 generally measures horizontal grab bar height to the top of the gripping surface, between 33 and 36 inches (840 and 915 mm) above the finish floor. Separate provisions apply to children's water closets and the lower bathtub back-wall rail; do not apply this range to those exceptions.
- Section 609.8 addresses structural strength, assessing the grab bar, its fasteners, mounting and supporting structure under a 250 pound (1112 N) force. This is a requirement of the standard, not a Flanso product test result.
Note that section 610 covers seats, not grab bars, so it should not be cited as a grab-bar requirement. Maintenance planning for stainless rails
A grab bar is a high-contact, high-load component. Its ongoing performance depends on both the product and the installation, so maintenance should be planned before the specification is finalised:
- Confirm with the manufacturer which cleaning agents and methods are appropriate for the specific finish, so that cleaning regimes do not degrade the surface.
- Establish an inspection schedule covering the bar, its fasteners and the wall condition at the fixings. Section 609.8 treats the assembly as a whole, so a bar cannot be assessed separately from its anchorage and backing.
- Record the installed locations and model references so that replacement parts match the original specification.
Do not treat the presence of a stainless finish as evidence of structural adequacy. Only the assembled condition, installed by a qualified installer on a suitable structure, can satisfy the strength requirement in use.
What to request from the manufacturer
Because finishes, steel grades and corrosion behaviour vary between products, ask for written, model-specific information before committing to a specification. Useful items to request include:
- A description of the finish and the manufacturer's recommended cleaning guidance.
- Model-specific documentation covering materials and fixings, requested directly from the manufacturer rather than assumed from the product name.
- Any mounting instructions that the qualified installer will follow on site.

Coordinating finish, structure and installation
The most useful time to align these decisions is during coordination, before ordering:
- The project designer confirms bar locations, lengths and heights against the applicable provisions in the ADA Standards.
- The specifier confirms the finish and coordinates it with other washroom hardware for consistency.
- The qualified installer reviews the substrate and backing and follows the manufacturer's installation instructions.
- The maintenance team receives cleaning and inspection guidance for the installed products.
This division of responsibilities keeps the finish decision separate from the compliance and structural decisions, each with a clear owner.

- Confirm grab bar diameters, heights and placements against the current ADA Standards text at https://www.access-board.gov/ada/, including any applicable exceptions.
- Select a finish suited to the washroom's cleaning regime, and obtain the manufacturer's cleaning guidance in writing.

A stainless steel finish is a sound, practical choice for commercial washroom rails when it is specified with full model information, installed by a qualified installer and supported by a clear maintenance plan.
